Where we come from

Declaration of independence

With the founding of feldmann+schultchen design studios in 1994, a mindset is co-founded – today design for human nature is the company name.

After studying design at the Hochschule für bildende Künste, Arne Schultchen and André Feldmann founded feldmann+schultchen design studios in Hamburg in 1994. Their interplay of free creative and conceptual thinking and analytical problem-solving quickly gained them attention and commissions in a wide range of industries. Internationally award-winning product designs found their way into museums or, like the standing desk for working, into Philippe Starck’s design yearbook.

The creative courage of feldmann+schultchen to come up with surprising but always simple design solutions that are self-evident in their effect convinced more and more national and international companies with the value of a partnership at eye level. Both in terms of project collaboration and long-term relationships.

The management of the continuously growing studio was expanded in 2008 with the addition of designer Stephan Kremerskothen – with feldmann+schultchen since 1998 – as a third partner and managing director.

In 2015, a team of 25 people and 16 designers worked across a wide range of design categories and continued to develop into a cross-disciplinary “biotope”. The studio now has two locations: In the high-rise building at the Hamburg wholesale market in the former auction wing with offices, project rooms, library, workshops and a large work hall. And floating on the Elbe, the FLOW retreat and workshop location.

With the renaming of feldmann+schultchen to design for human nature in 2015, the mindset of the founders was elevated to the new company name. Since then, design for human nature has increasingly proven to be the ideal response to the challenges of an ever more complex design environment. It radically focuses on people – with the aim of innovative and transformative design for a more humane, natural and sustainable living environment.

With its new orientation as a Strategy Lab and Design Studio, the company will position itself even more intensively as a design research laboratory in future. With the credo that the future of strategic design consulting based on an ever deeper understanding of human nature has only just begun.

In November 2018, André’s death was an incredible blow to our lives and our work in the studio. We will miss him forever.
